Good post, Linda. This is an issue that concerns many of us who care about nature. It is discouraging to hear those in industrial forestry boasting that they don't destroy nests or kills birds because they "watch out for birds" while operating heavy machinery. Likewise, also discouraging when I heard an interview with someone at DNRR who should know better, that birds can just "fly somewhere else" if their nest site is disturbed by forestry operations. Those with a good knowledge of birds and their habitat know that both of the above claims are entirely absurd. We are losing valuable habitat ever day that the current forestry operations take place. Amazing how so little is being done to preserve habitat for all of the migratory species that fly thousands of kilometres each year in order to nest here in Nova Scotia. It's too bad that certain people who should know better, can't seem to grasp that simple fact.

We have Barred Owls and Northern Parula nesting on our land and in our woods and bog along with Red Crossbills and Red-eyed Vireos. Canada Jays nest there too and it's not uncommon to have them appear out of nowhere in the spring as I walk through the woods, curious about this intruder. Thanks for the timely post Linda.
