There are currently three main wildfires burning in Nova Scotia, and according to the most recent government release, all are considered “out of control.” One is in the Pubnico area near Yarmouth where 59 hectares are burning.

I just sent an angry letter to Houston, Rushton and my MLA. There are already reports of harvesting machines operating on private land in broad daylight. So much for caring about whether a new fire gets started in the Annapolis Valley. I guess that MNRR trusts loggers and truckers not to throw cigarette butts on the ground more than they trust hikers, dogwalkers, anglers, etc... Having visited enough cut blocks in the past and seen all the butts, oil cans and trash that gets jettisoned on the ground, I don't really think I'd have the same faith that Houston and Rushton seem to possess.

I don't know, Bill. There is definitely some analysis that needs to be done to see what kinds of forest species composition and age classes were lost, particularly in the Shelburne area. Definitely something to look into.
Excellent article, Linda. The hypocrisy, stupidity, and arrogance of our government cowing to the forestry industry is mind boggling, indeed. These jokers clearly have very short memories -- thinking about the wildfire started by forestry equipment back in 2020 as reported on by the CBC. I can't see this foolishness as anything but gross negligence and gross incompetence.
Nova Scotians were very compliant during the Covid lockdowns, even reporting on anyone seen using a beach or park. I expect nothing less this time around. The community Facebook sites are already rife with reports of people spotted on trails. The eager little statists proudly pointing out radicals and extremists. According to the state I can’t even welcome you to use the trails on my land instead. Interesting times.
Forgetting that forestry companies build the fire roads that have allowed us to extinguish many forest fires over the years. Also, if you look at historical records( such as the Titus Smith survey in 1802) you would know that much of NS was burned over and barren long before forestry was a thing. Foresters are mainly professional and very much safety-oriented from my experience. Smokers on the other hand...
It's not about how professional foresters are, it's about metal scraping on rock, creating a spark in a very dry environment. I don't smoke and pose no danger to the forest walking with my dog. This is about the power vested interests have over our governments. There's no question - given the fire risk right now - that logging should be banned (on Crown land or private land) until the conditions change.
